About the Artist

I'm John Best, an Oklahoma watercolor artist based in Yukon, with a lifelong love of painting and a particular appreciation for landscapes, rural scenes, wildlife, and the places that tell a story.

For many years, I worked in oils and acrylics, capturing the world around me through bold strokes and vibrant color. About five years ago, I discovered watercolor, and everything changed. The softness, spontaneity, and gentle unpredictability of watercolor spoke to something deep within me.

Much of my inspiration comes from the landscapes and character of Oklahoma and the American West—a weathered barn, an old road disappearing toward the horizon, a quiet stream, wildlife on the prairie, or the traces of history left behind in an aging building. I'm especially drawn to ordinary places that make me wonder about the people who passed through them and the stories they might tell.

Watercolor allows me to suggest those stories without explaining everything. I enjoy the way light, color, texture, and sometimes a little unpredictability can turn a familiar scene into something worth looking at again.

Each painting reflects something that caught my attention—a place, a memory, a moment of light, or simply the feeling of being there. My hope is that my paintings bring that same sense of connection, curiosity, and quiet enjoyment to the people who live with them.
