My fascination with Route 66 began long after its golden age had passed. When my family traveled west, much of the journey had already shifted to the new Interstate Highway System. We covered the miles more quickly, but I often wondered what we had missed—the small towns, family-owned diners, quirky roadside attractions, and chance encounters that made the Mother Road legendary.
Today, whenever I discover a surviving stretch of Route 66, I can't help but imagine what it was like when these roads were filled with vacationing families and hopeful travelers. A glowing diner, a beautifully kept Chevrolet Bel Air, and the familiar Route 66 shield become more than nostalgic images—they become reminders of an era when the journey itself was part of the adventure.
With Cruising Break on the Mother Road, I wanted to recreate one of those moments. I imagine pulling off the highway at day's end, parking beneath the neon lights, sharing a burger and a milkshake, and listening to stories from fellow travelers before heading back onto the open road. It's a scene I never experienced firsthand, yet one I've come to appreciate through the history and spirit of America's most famous highway.
